The Project Management Professional (PMP®) certification is one of the Project Management Institute’s (PMI®) distinguished and globally recognized credentials. According to PMI’s PMP guide, you must have a minimum of three years of experience managing and directing projects to qualify for the PMP. What is 4500 or 7500 hours of project leadership and direction?
A project is a temporary undertaking undertaken to develop a one-of-a-kind product or service.
“Leading and directing” projects refers to any experience that fits under the five project management phases. The work involved in each of the five project management procedures is as follows:
• Initiating
Initiating a project or expressing your thoughts, developing the project’s purpose, or participating in project management.
• Planning
Converting a concept into a workable framework, including the creation of a Work Breakdown Structure (WBS), designs, resource planning, construction, and communication strategy.
• Executing
Executing the project scope within a confined period, resolving issues, managing quality, cost, and risk.
• Supervision and Control
Tracking the project, reporting on its status and any necessary adjustments, doing performance analysis, resolving issues, managing resources, stakeholders, and costs, among other things.
• Closing
Providing, evaluating, documenting, finishing, and monitoring the project’s final report, etc.
It is not required to hold the title “Project Manager” on all of the projects on which you worked.
Your 4500 or 7500 hours of experience may include any time spent working in project management processes. You are not required to have experience in all five process categories for each project.
The PMI’s PMP manual states that experience does not have to be compensated, but it must be in a professional context.
Requirement for PMP Experience
The term “project management experience” refers to the time spent doing various project management duties during the course of a project.
Until 2020, PMI required individuals with a bachelor’s or secondary degree to have a minimum of 4,500 and 7,500 hours of project management experience, respectively. PMI no longer specifies a minimum amount of hours. It just states that you must have between three and five years of project management expertise.
We shall proceed with the conversation assuming that a minimum of 4500 / 7500 hours is still necessary.
The following are some examples of how you can earn the needed hours:
- Case I: You spent 4500 / 7500 hours managing a single project.
- Case II: You’ve worked on many non-overlapping (sequential) projects and logged 4500 / 7500 hours in project management activities.
- Case III: You’ve worked on many overlapping (simultaneous) projects and logged 4500 / 7500 hours in project management activities.
When estimating your experience hours, keep the following points in mind:
- You should concentrate your efforts only on project management operations, rather than on all project tasks.
- You should analyze the hours spent on all of your projects over the previous three or five years (as per your educational qualification)
- You must track just hours that do not overlap across all of your tasks.
Examples of Project Management Experience
Today, project management is ingrained in virtually every business. Project management is critical for industries such as defense, infrastructure, construction, information technology, energy, and healthcare when it comes to developing new services and products. Additionally, projects assist in bringing new initiatives to existence, such as cost reduction, operational efficiency, and cost reduction.
Professionals working in the aforementioned businesses or in any other area that manages projects may sit for the PMP test.
While supervising a project, you must also be familiar with the five process groups, which include initiating, planning, executing, monitoring and controlling, and closing.
The following are some examples of tasks that might be classified as project management activities:
1. Planning: Project managers develop an overall blueprint for the project. This very first phase defines every aspect of how the strategy will proceed. This section comprises the primary objective, the resources required, the projected time period, and a contingency plan in case of deviations.
2. Leading: Project managers lead their teams by communicating with them, providing relevant facts, and ensuring that everyone is on the same page with regards to practically everything.
3. Execution: Once the plans are complete, it’s time to put them into action. A project manager must ensure that the plans are properly written out.
4. Budgeting: A critical role of project managers is to develop — and adhere to — a project budget. If unanticipated financial concerns emerge, the project manager is responsible for resolving them and reallocating resources as necessary.
5. Documentation: Using tools such as data collecting and status reports, project managers maintain track of each project’s progress.
6. Troubleshooting: It is critical to have a plan for the deliverable’s continued performance, which includes troubleshooting and maintenance.
7. Coordination: Project managers should be able to foster collaboration among their team members and address issues when they arise.
While experience counts, it is not required that you hold a project management qualification or title. You may be referred to as a functional leader, supervisor, group manager, or senior executive. Additionally, you are not need to have managed an entire project.
Depending on your sector and line of business, the projects you manage may be enormous or little, but it makes no difference as long as you have the necessary expertise.
Evidence of Previous Project Management Experience
The PMP certificate is worldwide regarded as a mark of competence and expertise in project management.
