A project is a temporary undertaking undertaken to develop a one-of-a-kind product or service.

“Leading and directing” projects refers to any experience that fits under the five project management phases. The work involved in each of the five project management procedures is as follows:

• Initiating

Initiating a project or expressing your thoughts, developing the project’s purpose, or participating in project management.

• Planning

Converting a concept into a workable framework, including the creation of a Work Breakdown Structure (WBS), designs, resource planning, construction, and communication strategy.

• Executing

Executing the project scope within a confined period, resolving issues, managing quality, cost, and risk.

• Supervision and Control

Tracking the project, reporting on its status and any necessary adjustments, doing performance analysis, resolving issues, managing resources, stakeholders, and costs, among other things.

• Closing

Providing, evaluating, documenting, finishing, and monitoring the project’s final report, etc.

It is not required to hold the title “Project Manager” on all of the projects on which you worked.

Your 4500 or 7500 hours of experience may include any time spent working in project management processes. You are not required to have experience in all five process categories for each project.

The PMI’s PMP manual states that experience does not have to be compensated, but it must be in a professional context.

Requirement for PMP Experience

The term “project management experience” refers to the time spent doing various project management duties during the course of a project.

Until 2020, PMI required individuals with a bachelor’s or secondary degree to have a minimum of 4,500 and 7,500 hours of project management experience, respectively. PMI no longer specifies a minimum amount of hours. It just states that you must have between three and five years of project management expertise.

When estimating your experience hours, keep the following points in mind:

  •  You should concentrate your efforts only on project management operations, rather than on all project tasks.
  • You should analyze the hours spent on all of your projects over the previous three or five years (as per your educational qualification)
  •  You must track just hours that do not overlap across all of your tasks.

Examples of Project Management Experience

Today, project management is ingrained in virtually every business.
